I once asked my grandfather why he and my grandmother didn't get a pet. He said because when you get a pet, you know you're going to outlive it, and you'll have to have that pet die. He found that sadness to outweigh the joy that a pet provides. He'd had a dog as a boy, and was crushed when the dog died.
I don't look at it that way. We're old, we've got an incredible dog that is old and surviving because of the meds we give him. When he goes, he'll be the fourth dog we've buried in our long marriage. It will be sad. But we have a younger dog to keep us company, and we'll probably get another dog to keep that dog company. For me, the joy is well worth the sorrow.
When the season starts, you know that the odds are incredibly high that the season will end in a loss. Only one team gets out alive, and the odds are, it ain't going to be yours.
I say focus on the joy the team brought and the wonderful diversion from the day to day crap and headlines. Neither team won their last game. Both team's path to extermination was nerve wracking. But, both provided super fun seasons and both achieved wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more than we fans should expect, given the level of support that softball and baseball get from the fans.
It was a hell of a season for both teams. Sucks that both lost, in such agonizing fashions. But, I'm quite happy to have been a fan of both teams this season.
Thank you for great seasons! And fck the Red Raiders!
