A few wins at the end here don’t really change my concerns about Mick Cronin. I’ve never thought he was a bad coach from an X’s and O’s standpoint — I actually think he’s strong there. But there’s no real sign that the sideline outbursts and the more unusual behavior are going to stop.
At some point, you have to ask what that costs the program. I’m just one person, but it’s honestly embarrassing watching him grab a player by the shirt and yell, “Get him the F… out of here.” You also have to wonder how that plays in recruiting. There already seems to be some struggles there, and the last couple of classes have been pretty disappointing.
Maybe a deep tournament run — and I’ll admit I’m skeptical that happens — changes the narrative and quiets a lot of this. Maybe he builds a strong roster for next year. I’ve said all season that I like how Williams and Freeny are developing, and Perry has taken a big leap. I even like what I see from Booker. I do think Cronin develops players.
Still, if I were running the program, I’d probably make a change sooner rather than later. I still feel there is a road for him to win someone like me back, but it isn't with these last few wins and what is likely an exit in the first weekend. What I really want to see is a strong team next year and a stop to the embarrassing moments.
