When UCLA hired Chip Kelly, they hired what appeared to be a proven head coach and the hottest option available. It didn't work out, but nobody was predicting that at the time.

When we hired Foster, it was so late in the process, we didn't have a ton of options. There may have been a better choice than Foster, but we were picking from a very limited menu.

Based on the Kelly hiring, it seems like UCLA made a genuine effort to turn around the mediocrity of the last couple of decades. Foster may have been the least bad option at the time.
