A number of states have been doing this, including California.
The California version has the districts drawn by a bipartisan committee of citizens. It has 5 Democrats, 5 Republicans, and 4 Independents. It is a fair, but complicated process. See California Citizens Redistricting Commission at Wikipedia for details.
I was part of this process in 2010. I applied to be a Commissioner and got past the first round of selection, but that was it.
Fair districts can be drawn. But the problem is that it disadvantages a state when other states are gerrymandering.
