His plan to get it was gaining a quick peace deal in Ukraine that that eluded Biden so that he could claim the title of the greatest dealmaker in the history of the world.
In his mind, the fastest deal would be achieved by convincing Zelinsky to capitulate. He probably still feels that way. That's where he's focused all the diplomatic energy. Which has done nothing but waste time because he's asking Ukraine to accept the unacceptable.
This is what delights Russia. We're not mediators. We're the cheap lawyer who wants his client to settle prematurely so he can grab his share of the settlement.
As much as we've helped Ukraine, we could have done a helluva lot more.
