Hurley uses actions and patterns with off ball screens that get guys open. Guys don't just stand stationary with their thumb up their butt and MAGICALLY get unguarded.
Passing is easy when guys are cutting and getting open. Passing is hard when guys are standing around, doing nothing. Sure, DA and lasar could pass the ball back and forth from the point to the wing 20 times. GREAT PASSING! WHAT SKILL! but what does it accomplish? Nothing. It's just wasted motion.
Here's a typical UConn assist: 1) guy cuts backdoor, 2) ball handler hits him with an accurate, well-timed pass, 3) cutter makes the layup.
Why is only 2 singled out for praise? Without 1, there's no 2. Without 3, the 2 doesn't result in an assist.
Face it, people. Box score stats are lame, as they currently exist. You have to watch the game and how teams actually play.
