As time goes on I am becoming more perplexed about Cronin's thinking. The four guys he's brought in make sense to me, but it just seems to be not enough. Clearly, it appears that he still has money to spend so I assume he's not through. But some of the guys, like this guy from New Mexico, where it seems UCLA wasn't even in the mix on any level leaves me scratching my head in bewilderment. I guess one could argue that he would have been redundant after Jovic, but still.

Knowing Cronin's ways, I know he has done his homework and knows who and what is out there. Unlike some here on this board who are always looking for some sort of incompetence with Cronin, I don't buy that at all. He may have some limitations in regards to his philosophies but those, to my mind, are reasoned choices. One can argue that those choices have limitations and perhaps are shortsighted, but incompetence they are not.

The only thing I'm left with in trying to figure out what he's doing is that UCLA academics put more of a burden on his recruiting than we are aware of. And/or, UCLA and Cronin just don't have as much money as we are assuming. It looks to me that perhaps after retaining his players and filling out the rest of his roster he has enough money for one big ticket player and maybe a little left over to bring in one other marginal player like he did last season with Alston.
