While it was once a major power broker within the college football landscape and believed it still had the leverage to impose its will in making all sorts of demands on the evolving shape of post season football, it has instead become one of the most marginalized voices in the equation and struggled mightily with its loss in stature. Both literally and figuratively it now little more than a relic, which has had a hard time accepting its downsized role of ever diminishing significance within college football.
I don't think this lawsuit has much in the way of teeth, as it would seem to be pretty difficult to make the case that a preliminary discussion constitutes a material breach, particularly considering that UCLA is continuing to pay the Rose Bowl as stipulated under the terms of the contract. Instead, I think this is a feeble Rose Bowl trying to flex and send the message to UCLA that any attempts to get out of the horrendous contract it signed with the Rose Bowl will come with an expensive fight. Ultimately, the question for UCLA will be whether it is more costly to remain at the Rose Bowl and if it makes more sense to negotiate a short term hit in order to provide a path towards longer term success.
