A rougue AI starts getting into other computer networks and installs copies of itself on those computers. Once there are multiple copies of the AI operating to duplicate itself, they number of copies explodes exponentially.

Quickly the AI controls every computer and the entire Internet.

Banking stops. You cannot shop at most stores because the scanners won't work to check you out and your credit card won't work anyway. When no one can buy gas, transportation stops. Food stops arriving in the cities.

Utilities stop. No electricity. No water.

Is that sci-fi? It might not be.
